Filipino Accountant Qualifications: What Australian Firms Should Know

October 22, 2026•Hiring

Filipino Accountant Qualifications at a Glance

Filipino accountant qualifications follow a clear path: a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy, then the national CPA licensure examination. For an Australian or New Zealand firm, the useful questions are what that licence tells you, how the standards compare and what stays with your own registered agent.

Qualification Who issues it What it tells you
BS Accountancy Philippine universities Four-year degree in accounting, audit, tax and law
Philippine CPA Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) Passed the national licensure examination
Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks The software vendors Platform experience, confirmed per role
BAS or tax agent registration Tax Practitioners Board (Australia) Not held by offshore staff: stays with your firm

The Philippine CPA

The Philippine CPA is a licence issued by the Professional Regulation Commission after the CPA Licensure Examination, which the Board of Accountancy sets. Candidates sit it after a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.

A Philippine CPA is not the same as membership of CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants ANZ. Those bodies run their own programmes, and a Philippine licence gives no Australian membership or registration.

Standards: PFRS, AASB and NZ IFRS

Philippine Financial Reporting Standards (PFRS) are based on IFRS. So are Australian Accounting Standards, set by the AASB, and New Zealand's NZ IFRS, set by the XRB.

The recognition and measurement principles are therefore shared. Local rules are not: GST, BAS, PAYG withholding, superannuation and KiwiSaver are learned inside your procedures, with your review checkpoints.

Software Experience

Most Australian and New Zealand firms run Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks Online. OFP has Xero Certified Advisors and QuickBooks ProAdvisors on staff, and recruits for MYOB experience when your practice runs on it.

The software each role needs is confirmed during role definition, before candidates are selected. See Xero experience and MYOB experience for what to ask.

What OFP Screens For

The professionals OFP hires are degree-qualified in accounting or finance, and many are part-qualified or qualified CPAs. For each role OFP confirms:

  • The accounting experience the role needs, set in the role definition
  • The software and practice management tools you use
  • Communication with clients and reviewers in English, on your working hours
  • Experience with structured, process-driven work: the strongest fit for an offshore team

What Stays With Your Registered Agent

Registration as a BAS or tax agent is with the Tax Practitioners Board. OFP's professionals are not registered agents. They prepare the work; review, sign-off and lodgement stay with your firm and its registered agent.

For how that works through a BAS quarter, see offshore BAS preparation support.

Answers for buyers

What qualifications do Filipino accountants have?

The professionals OFP hires are degree-qualified in accounting or finance, and many are part-qualified or qualified CPAs. OFP has Xero Certified Advisors and QuickBooks ProAdvisors on staff, with experience in MYOB and practice management tools. Each role's required experience is confirmed during role definition, before candidates are selected.

Is a Philippine CPA the same as an Australian CPA?

No. A Philippine CPA is licensed by the Professional Regulation Commission after a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and the CPA licensure examination. CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants ANZ are separate bodies with their own programmes, and a Philippine licence gives no Australian membership or registration.

Do Filipino accountants know Australian accounting standards?

Philippine Financial Reporting Standards are based on IFRS, as are Australian Accounting Standards and New Zealand's NZ IFRS, so the recognition and measurement principles are shared. Local rules such as GST, BAS, PAYG withholding and superannuation are learned inside your procedures and review checkpoints.

Can a Filipino accountant be my registered BAS or tax agent?

No. BAS and tax agents register with the Tax Practitioners Board in Australia, and OFP's professionals are not registered agents. They prepare the work; review, sign-off and lodgement stay with your firm and its registered agent.
